 And The

                          Sentry Tournament of Champions

Last Year’s Champion was Jon Rahm

As Deb pointed out . . .  can’t call him the defending champion

OK . . . OK. . . Deb has me doing dry January and I’m a little cranky

This used to be the start of the PGA season . . . but that has become a casualty of the Tour trying to make things better with the ‘wrap around’.  First played in 1953 in Las Vegas, the first Champion was Al Besselink, who took home a $10,000 first prize.  A friend of Babe Zaharias, who had just been diagnosed with cancer, he donated half of it to cancer research.

FUN FACT:  As this was in Vegas, Al bet on himself to win, $500 at 25-1 odds and he picked up an additional $12,500.  Not sure that would go over these days . . . unless you’re Phil Mickelson.

That’s Al on the right next to Babe Ruth . . . and that is the other Babe kneeling.  The two on the left are Louise Suggs and Sam Byrd.

FUN FACT #2:  Mr. Byrd played Major League Baseball and on the PGA tour.  He is the only person to have played in both the World Series (member of the NY Yankees winning team in 1932, Babe Ruth’s called shot) and the Masters (finished 3rd in 1941)

Held at Kapalua since 1999, this is usually a ‘bring the family’ tournament.  Maybe not so much this year after the wild fires that devastated the island.  About 10 miles away from all that, the course was still closed and just reopened in October.  Expect the tragedy to be a big part of the TV coverage.

This is a premium event, which means big money and no cut.  This course is known for wide fairways, only three par 3’s and low scores.  The winner is almost always twenty something under par.  Three times the winning score was 30 under or better.  Jon was 27 under last year for a two stroke victory so . . .  Buckle Up!

The Holidays are over . . . Four and an Alt

This is a no cut event so the Alt stays on the bench unless there is a WD
