This week we stay with the Majors and the LPGA Chevron Championship. First played as a non-major in 1972, when Jane Blalock won the ‘Colgate Dinah Shore Winner’s Circle’. She got just north of $20k for her efforts. At its debut it was the richest event on the schedule. Jane was rookie of the year in 1969 and a 27 time winner on the LPGA. She is a controversial figure as a month after winning the Dinah Shore she was suspended for signing an incorrect scorecard. She was accused of replacing her ball incorrectly on a green. She sued the LPGA and won. Despite a better record than others who are in, she has not been inducted to the HoF. Click the red link if you would like to know more.
In 1983 it was designated as a Major and called the Colgate Dinah Shore. The first major champion was Amy Alcott. It was Amy’s second victory in ’88 when she started the tradition of jumping into Poppie’s Pond. Eventually the natural water hazard was lined with concrete and the water was treated.
When the event went to the Woodlands, a part of the lake next to the 18th green was cleaned out, a dock and ladder were built and they put in netting because of . . . you know . . . alligators. Several of the golfers said right up front “Oh Hell No!” . . . but Lilia went in . . . I am thinking someone is eventually going to give us the ‘thanks but no thanks’.
FUN FACT: In 1998, Pat Hurst won and wadded in to Poppie’s Pond up to her knees before getting out She can’t swim . . . Do you suppose she still got the bathrobe?
