It was a new toy . . . briefly
First played in 1955 where the champion was Beverly Hanson . . . She won $1200 for her efforts. Beverly passed in 2014 but was voted into the World Golf HoF last year . . . she was just inducted this year . . . shouldn’t they do this while the person is still living???
This the second time the PGA has been held at the Sahalee Country Club. In 2016 Brooke Henderson beat Lydia Ko in a playoff for her first Major win.
It was also the sight of the 1998 PGA Championship. The course garnered a lot of comment from the players. Justin Leonard said “Everybody heard there were a lot of trees … I don’t think anybody imagined this many” All agreed the only way to play the course was to drive it straight . . . not surprisingly Tiger finished T10.
FUN FACT: This is a PGA Championship and by rule is for professionals only. In 2005 this rule was revoked to allow 15-year-old amateur Michelle Wie to compete. While not publicly acknowledged . . . this was done in order to attract more media coverage and sell more tickets. Many professionals objected . . . and then Michelle finished second alone. When Michelle turned pro they put the rule back.
