I finished sixth

This the third leg of the grand slam.  Sam Snead and Phil Mickelson need(ed) the U.S. Open to complete the career grand slam.

FUN FACT:  The record for the most runner-up finishes in the U.S. Open is . . . Phil . . . six times . . . not one was a playoff . . . twice he lost by one shot.

First played in 1895, the first champion was Horace Rawlins who took home $150.  And for the next 15 years the event was won by a Brit or a Scot.  The first American champion was John McDermott in 1911, he repeated in 1912.  He still holds the record as the youngest champion, at just under 20 years of age.  Francis Ouimet was the first amateur champion in 1913.  He started a bit of a trend as from 1913 to 1916, amateurs won 3 out of 4.  Bobby Jones won four, and in 1933  Johnny Goodman was the last amateur to take home the trophy.

FUN FACT #2:  Despite what they put in the movie, Francis defeated Harry Vardon by 5 shots and Ted Ray by 6 in the Playoff.  It was close for most of the way . . .  but Vardon and Ray stumbled coming down the stretch while Francis had a bogey free back nine to seal the deal.  The length back then was just over 6200 yards.
