Back with the ladies this week.  This is the National Championship for Canada and has been since 1973, when Jocelyne Bourassa took home the trophy.   LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1972, a member of the Canadian Hall of Fame and this was her only victory on the women’s tour.  After her win at the inaugural running, there wasn’t another Canadian Champion until Brooke Henderson in 2018.  This is the first time the event has been held at this course.

The title of Major championship on the LPGA has been a bit fluid.  This event was a major from 1979 through 2000 when it lost that distinction to enable the British Open to be elevated.  Like our fun fact from the Evian . . . in 2000 Meg Mallon got a Major . . . and in 2001 Annika got ‘just’ a tour win . . . and the winner’s check for both was the same.

FUN FACT:  In 2012, Lydia Ko won this event as a 15 year old amateur.  Setting a record for the youngest person to win on the LPGA tour.  She was also the first amateur to win a tour event in over 40 years.  She repeated as an amateur in 2013 and won as a professional in 2015.
