The Defending Champion is Nelly Korda

This week the women vie to become an Olympic Champion.  This is the third running of golf as an Olympic event in the modern era.  Golf debuted in 1900 where American Margaret Abbott was champion.  The event was a nine hole affair and Margaret won with a score of 47.  For her victory she received a porcelain bowl, not a gold medal.  Margaret was the very first American woman to win an Olympic event.  In fact Margaret didn’t realize she was participating in the second Olympiad, she thought it was just a golf tournament.  She lived her entire life not realizing she was an Olympic Champion.

FUN FACT:  Margaret had company at the Olympics . . . her mother also competed, finishing in a tie for seventh.  This is the only time a mother and daughter have competed in the same event at the same  Olympics.
