Yes, we are doing this again
This used to be the first event on tour . . . but now we have the ‘wrap around’ season. First played in 1953 in Las Vegas, the first Champion was Al Besselink, who took home a tidy $10,000 . . . which in today’s dollars would be worth $118,226.22 . . . and that is just a little more than the golfers who finished T33 at last year’s tournament.
Held at Kapalua since 1999, this is one where you bring the family. A premium event, which means big money and no cut. This course is known for wide fairways, only three par 3’s and low scores. The field used to be limited to the previous season’s champions. It now also includes everyone who qualified for the Tour Championship.
FUN FACT: In 1959, Mike Souchak won this event by two strokes . . . even though he shot a final round 77. Mike was a two time Ryder Cup player with a career record of 5-1-0.
