This event has been around since 1981 when it was the million dollar challenge.  That first year it was a five person event with Jack, Johnny, Lee, Gary and Seve.  Johnny Miller won in a playoff when Seve three putted on the ninth hole of sudden death.  For his win Johnny received $500,00 out of the $1 million purse.  The field increased over the years up to 30 with the total purse also going up with the winner receiving a million starting in 1987.  In 2016, it became a full field event on the European Tour.

FUN FACT:   In 1982 at the second running of the event, Ray Floyd won in a playoff but only earned $300,000.  The field had been increased to 10 and everyone got a check, last place received $50,000.  Sounds like . . . LIV?

We continue the playoffs this week, so for those still in the running the usual rules are still in place.  For the rest of us it is . . .
