We join the West Coast swing already in progress.  Played at the iconic Torrey Pines golf resort, which has been the venue for two U.S. Opens . . . you remember, Tiger won on a broken leg.  (He loves this course, besides the Open he has won this event 7 times . . .  four in a row.)

This was first played in 1952 as the San Diego Open held at the San Diego Country Club.  The first champion was Ted Kroll.  This was Ted’s first of eight wins on the PGA tour.  It netted him a winners check of $2,000.  Something of a hero in WWII, he received three purple hearts for wounds received in battle.  He was leading money winner on the tour in 1956 and played on three Ryder Cups . . . his record was 3-1.

FUN FACT:  After he used his considerable celebrity to conduct a public campaign about professional golf being the last major sport to explicitly bar golfers of color . . . Boxer Joe Louis received a sponsor’s exemption to the inaugural event in 1952.

Yes . . .  Joe Louis was the first black man to play in a PGA sponsored event . . .

He missed the cut but still . . . it took the heavyweight champion to shame the PGA???
