ATT Pebble Beach Pro-Am 217

This week the Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Played at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill

PB 6816 yards Par 72
SG 7035 yards Par 72

Defending Champion is Justin Rose

In the TH the Defending Champion is Max

Don’t have a photo of Max

Started by Bing Crosby in 1937, the first Champion was Sam Snead.  The official record says he won $500, although some say it was $700  . . .  What is not in dispute is that he wanted it in cash.  This event is played over the two courses the first two days . . . the final two rounds are played at Pebble.

Two players have won this event five times . . . probably not the two you would think . . .  Phil Mickelson and Mark O’Meara.   Tiger has won only once . . . in 2000 by 2.  Of course that was the year he came back to Pebble to win the U.S. Open by 15 strokes.  Part of the Tiger Slam.

He won the U.S. Open with a triple bogey in the third round

Gene Littler holds a unique record . . .  he won the 1975 event as a pro and in 1954 as the amateur partner . . . the only person to have done both.  Of course the level of play by the amateurs is not always so high . . . In 1969, ABC’s Jim McKay solemnly announced to a nationwide television audience  . . .  “And now here’s Jack Lemmon, about to hit that all-important eighth shot.”

FUN FACT:  In 1967, Bing was pleased the notoriously difficult Spyglass Hill was added to the rota . . . he predicted Jack wouldn’t break par . . . and then Jack shot two under . . . to this day he has a five dollar bill signed by Bing Crosby.

This is a Premium event, big money, star studded field and NO cut.  (you know what that means).  Last year Justin won $1.62 million . . . this year the champion gets $3.6 million . . . Bidenomics !!
